Most black and white converters give you one button that drains the colour and stops there. The result often looks flat and grey. You can convert a photo to black and white free with our Black & White tool, with no app and no account, and this guide shows how to choose a look that actually suits the picture.
Grayscale vs black and white
Grayscale simply removes colour, so every photo comes out the same muted mid grey. A good black and white photo is shaped on purpose: deeper blacks, brighter highlights, and contrast chosen for the subject. That is the difference between a filter and a finished print.
Which preset suits your photo
The tool has seven monochrome presets. These are the ones most people need:
- Classic: a balanced starting point that works on most photos.
- Portrait: flattering on skin tones, good for faces and profile pictures.
- High Contrast: a dramatic noir look with strong blacks, good for street and night shots.
- Landscape: brings out skies, clouds and texture in rock, sand and buildings.
- Vintage Film: a softer, older look that pairs well with film grain.
Street and Silvery are there too if you want a grittier or a brighter, metallic finish.
Fine-tune contrast, grain and tone
After the preset, three controls do most of the work:
- Tonal Contrast deepens the blacks and lifts the highlights. Push it for drama, ease it off for a gentle portrait.
- Exposure / Brightness fixes a photo that comes out too dark or too pale.
- Analog Film Grain adds texture, so the image feels like a print rather than a screen.
For a darkroom feel, try a split tone. Warm Amber gives an old-print warmth, Selenium a cool purple-brown, and Cool Platinum and Cyanotype lean blue.
When a photo looks better in black and white
Black and white is a good rescue for photos shot under ugly mixed lighting, like orange street lamps with a blue window, where the colours fight each other. Removing colour also hides a busy background and puts the attention on light, shape and expression. Portraits with strong window light, rainy streets and textured landscapes usually convert well.
How to convert a photo to black and white online
- Open the Black & White tool on a phone or a computer.
- Upload a JPG, PNG or HEIC photo up to 25MB.
- Pick a preset, then adjust contrast, brightness, grain and tint.
- Download the result as a PNG file.
Converting keeps the same pixel dimensions, though a PNG can be larger than the JPG you started with. Your photo is processed in memory and is not stored on our servers.
