A photo rarely arrives in the shape you need. A profile picture wants a square, a story wants a tall frame, and a thumbnail wants a wide one. Cropping fixes that: you choose the shape, keep the part that matters and cut the rest. You can crop an image online free with our browser tool, with no app and no account.
Which shape for which place
| Where it goes | Ratio to pick |
|---|---|
| Profile picture, square feed post | 1:1 |
| Instagram portrait post | 3:4, or Freeform at 4:5 |
| Story, Reel cover, phone wallpaper | 9:16 |
| YouTube thumbnail, slides, desktop wallpaper | 16:9 |
| Standard photo print | 3:2 or 2:3 |
| Older camera and tablet shape | 4:3 or 3:4 |
There is no 4:5 button. For an Instagram portrait post, 3:4 is close to 4:5. If you want it exact, use Freeform and draw the box a little taller than it is wide, about five units tall for every four across.
How to crop an image online free in three steps
- Upload your photo. JPG, PNG and other common formats work, up to 25MB.
- Pick a ratio. Choose 1:1, 9:16, 16:9 or any preset. Original keeps the photo's own shape while you trim the edges, and Freeform lets you draw any shape.
- Drag the box and download. Move and resize the box over the part you want to keep, then save the cropped image.
How to crop a picture into a perfect square
Pick 1:1 and the box stays square however you resize it. For a profile picture, keep the face in the middle and leave a little space above the head, because most apps show it in a circle and cut the corners. For a feed post, the square can sit anywhere on the photo, so slide it to the most interesting part.
Framing tips that make a crop look better
- Leave headroom. Do not cut through the top of the head unless you mean to go tight.
- Put the eyes on the upper third. Faces look natural with the eyes about a third of the way down the frame.
- Avoid cutting at joints. A crop through wrists, elbows or knees looks accidental.
- Keep text away from the edges of a 9:16 story, where app buttons sit on top of it.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
Cropping does not blur or recompress what is left, but it does keep fewer pixels. A tight crop from a small photo can look soft when shown large. Start from the original photo, not a screenshot or a copy sent through a chat app, and crop no tighter than you need.
If your photo is the right shape already and only needs new pixel dimensions, resizing is the better tool. Use the Resize Image tool for that.
Is my photo uploaded or stored?
Your image is processed in memory to make the crop and is not kept on our servers. It is free, and you do not need to sign up or install anything.
