A website saves an image as WebP and your editor will not open it. A form wants PNG and you have a JPG. A free JPG to PNG converter should take seconds, and it can, free and without an account. Here is how, plus which format to use and when.
How to convert JPG to PNG (and other formats) in three steps
- Open the free image converter in any browser, on a phone or a PC.
- Upload your image. Each file can be up to 25MB.
- Pick the target format, JPEG, PNG or WebP, and download.
The same tool also saves to HEIC, BMP and TIFF. The quality slider only affects the lossy formats, JPEG, WebP and HEIC. For a normal photo, a setting around 90 keeps it looking the same while the file stays reasonable.
JPG to PNG: what it does and does not do
Converting JPG to PNG is useful when an app or form only accepts PNG, or when you plan to edit the image several times and do not want each save to add more compression.
Two things it will not do:
- It does not restore quality. Detail lost when the JPG was saved is gone. The PNG is a lossless copy of the JPG as it is now, usually in a bigger file.
- It does not make the background transparent. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. To get a see-through background, remove it first, then save as PNG.
WebP to JPG: why your downloads are WebP
Many websites serve images as WebP because the files are smaller and pages load quicker. When you save one, it arrives as .webp, and some older apps, editors and upload forms will not take it. Convert it to JPG and it will open almost anywhere. If the image is a logo or graphic with a transparent background, convert WebP to PNG instead so the transparency is kept.
PNG to JPG: smaller files for photos
A photo saved as PNG can be several times larger than the same photo as JPG. Converting PNG to JPG is lossy, but at a high quality setting the difference is hard to see, and the file becomes much easier to email or upload. Avoid it for screenshots with text or logos with flat colour, where JPG can leave fuzzy edges, and for anything with a transparent background, which turns solid in a JPG.
Which format should you use?
- JPG: photos, and anything going to email, WhatsApp or an upload form.
- PNG: logos, screenshots, text graphics and anything that needs transparency.
- WebP: images for your own website, where small files matter.
