Motion Blur Effect Online Free: Make a Still Photo Look Fast

A sharp photo of a runner or a bike can look strangely still. Motion blur adds the streaks your eye expects from something moving fast. Here is how to add a motion blur effect to a photo online free, with no app and no account.

Add motion blur in three steps

  1. Open the free Motion Blur tool and upload your photo.
  2. Set the angle and distance of the blur, or turn on Rotational Blur for a spin.
  3. Raise Keep Center Sharp if your subject is in the middle, then download as JPEG, PNG or WebP.

The settings

  • Angle of Blur (0 to 360 degrees). Match it to the way the subject moves: 0 for side to side, 90 for up and down, anything between for a diagonal.
  • Distance of Blur (1 to 100 px). How long the streaks are. Small for a hint of movement, large for real speed.
  • Rotational Blur (spin). Blurs in a circle instead of a line. Good for wheels, fans or a spinning dancer.
  • Keep Center Sharp (0 to 100). Keeps the middle of the photo crisp while the rest blurs.

Ideas

  • A runner, cyclist or car with streaks behind them.
  • A pet mid-jump or chasing a ball.
  • A dancer with a spin blur.
  • A city at night, with light streaks for a busy feel.
  • A cricket or football shot, with the ball or the bowler in motion.

Tips for a believable blur

  • Blur in the direction of travel. Streaks that cross the movement look wrong.
  • Keep the subject sharp. In real panning shots the subject is sharp and the background streaks. Put the subject in the centre and raise Keep Center Sharp.
  • Start small. A distance of 10 to 25 often looks real. Go bigger only for an action poster.
  • Use spin only on round things or for a deliberately wild effect.

Motion blur vs background blur

Motion blur adds speed. A background blur makes the subject stand out with soft focus behind it, like a portrait lens. For that look, use the free background blur tool.
