Film cameras are back, but film is slow and costly. The look is what most people want: warm colour, soft grain, a light leak in the corner and that orange date in the bottom right. Here is how to get it with a vintage film filter online free.
Add a film look in three steps
- Open the free Vintage Film Camera tool and upload your photo.
- Pick a film preset, then type a date stamp or turn it off.
- Adjust grain, warmth, fade and light leak, then download.
Film presets
- Kodak Gold style: warm and golden. The classic family-album look.
- Fuji Superia style: cooler, with greener tones. Good for streets and nature.
- Disposable Flash: harsh flash and contrast, like a party snap.
- Y2K Warm Haze: soft and hazy, like an early 2000s point-and-shoot.
These are looks inspired by those films, not the films themselves.
The date stamp
Type any date in the stamp box, such as the day the photo was taken or a year that means something, like '98 or '05. Choose the colour (orange, yellow, green, red or white) and the corner, or pick none to hide it. Orange in the bottom right is the classic.
The other sliders
- Film Grain: adds texture. Around the default looks real; very high looks like an effect.
- Film Warmth: warmer or cooler overall.
- Shadow Fade: lifts the blacks to a soft grey, like old prints.
- Light Leak: none, a subtle leak on the left, a burn on the right, or a corner flare.
Photos that suit a film look
- Candid moments with friends, not posed ones.
- Holidays, road trips and beach days.
- Parties and family dinners, especially with the Disposable Flash preset.
- Everyday details: coffee, a street, a pet asleep.
Tips for a believable film photo
- Pick a candid shot. Film looks most real on unposed moments.
- Crop to 3:2. That is the shape of a 35mm frame. The free crop tool has it.
- Add a frame with the free Polaroid frame for an instant-photo look.
- Keep the date believable if you want it to pass as a real print.
